Southern United States of America, 1858.
A slave auction goes wrong leaving a group of slaves, that were meant to be sold to Billette Hall, in the hands of a cruel slave master. That sale left slaves separated from their loved ones and family members. Marion’s life changes when Master Jesse of Billette Hall Plantation summons her into his quarters for an important task. She must sneak into the auction grounds and help the displaced slaves escape. Those slaves are to be brought safely to Billette Hall.

Armed with a Revolver and a single shot, Marion, the 15-year-old slave girl, must lead the displaced slaves on a 4-day trek through the wilderness to safety. The trek is harrowing and filled with danger as they are forced to avoid bounty hunters, slave catchers and their dogs.

Making matters worse, Marion and the rest of the escaped slaves soon discover that there are nightmares more frightening than the slavers. They are being hunted! A strange unknown man, covered in mud and wielding an axe, stalks them. Everyone who has crossed his path is dead.  Marion and her tiny group of frightened men and women will suffer the same fate unless they can rise above their fear.

Excerpt:

“Is someone over there?” he says.

The female slave walks back towards the bed, putting herself between the bed and the window so that she is standing in the flickering light. She sees something move, then hears something. She is now also looking in the dark part of the room. After a second or 2, something steps out of the shadow. A man covered from head to toe in what looks like mud and manure. As soon as she sees him step into view, he lifts his arm where she sees an axe in his hand. He swings the axe into the male slave’s neck and blood splatters, staining the female slave’s dress. She screams and runs for the door.

The mud-covered man tries to cut her off before she gets to the door, but she is pretty quick and makes it out before he gets there. She runs down the hallway screaming. The male slave on the bed falls forward off the bed and hits head first on the ground, blood leaks and puddles on the floor around him.

The mud-covered man runs down the hall after the slave girl, she runs into a room where 2 other slaves are sleeping in the bed. She screams, waking them. They jump to their feet, and it suddenly gets quiet. She doesn’t see the mud-covered man anymore. She explains to the 2 slaves what happened and they decide it’s time to go.

When they step back in the hall, it is completely dark. All the candles are out. They can’t see the fire flickering from the dock on that side of the house so they don’t even have that. The three slowly walk down the hall towards the front door. The walk looks like a long one as the front door is on the other side of the house from where they are.

“You smell that?” one of the slaves asks.

Before the others could answer the mud-covered man comes walking out of a room in front of them and throws an ax into the slave’s chest. The slave falls to the ground grasping for the axe. The mud man then lifts a second axe he is holding and begins chopping at the second slave from that room. The first chop goes into his side, the second into his shoulder. The third into his temple which causes him to fall. He chops at him two more times then runs and grabs the other axe from the first slave’s chest. The Female slave is screaming and running for the front door. The mud-covered man chases her. An axe in each hand. He swiftly follows her out the front door and down the path. She runs as fast as she can but he quickly catches up to her.

He reaches out with one axe and hooks it around her neck. He pulls on it, causing her feet to come out from under her, flying forward in the air. He takes the other axe and follows her to the ground where it embeds into her face, just across her nose and cheek, where it gets stuck. He puts his feet on her neck to hold her body down while he pulls the axe free. He comes down one more time with the axe, this time across her neck, killing her instantly.

The slaves that were at the dock by the fire hear the scream and decide to come see what is going on. They arrive to see the female slave dead on the trail and the other slaves in the house dead. After seeing the dead bodies, the dock slaves leave in a hurry. No one left alive knows who did the killing. Everyone that saw the mud-covered man is now dead.
